Family Room
The Ronald McDonald House Family Room is an extension of the Ronald McDonald House of Durham. This room is located on the 5th floor of the children’s hospital and is a joint effort between Duke University Medical Center and the Ronald McDonald House of Durham. The Family Room is a special place where families of hospitalized children can go to escape the hospital atmosphere while at the same time being only a moment away from their child’s bedside. The Family Room provides families with some of the comforts of home including:
- Comfortable chairs in a living room environment
- Stocked kitchenette
- Showers and toilet facilities
- Laundry facilities
- Internet access
Hospital waiting areas are often crowded, noisy and not very comfortable. These factors do nothing to alleviate the stress that family members of hospitalized children are already feeling. They are often tired, scared and unsure about what the future may bring.
When a family enters the Ronald McDonald House Family Room they are greeted by a volunteer who acts as host or hostess for the room. This volunteer will explain what services are available and help make the family feel at home. The main sitting area provides families with a comfortable place to relax and regroup. In the kitchen they will find a wide variety of snacks and beverages to help them refuel. There is always a supply of fresh clean towels and washcloths that families can use for a refreshing shower. Thanks to the generosity of our volunteers and donors, all of these goods and services are provided to families at no cost.
