A Beacon of Hope
Few things are more difficult for families than the heartbreak of having a critically ill son or daughter. While the children undergo seemingly endless days of treatment for cancer, leukemia, diseases of the lung, kidneys and other organs, their families are often alone, far from home and confronting the stress of an uncertain future.
The Ronald McDonald House and Family Room of Durham provides a home-away-from-home for seriously ill children and their families receiving treatment at Duke Children’s Hospital and other medical centers in the Triangle.
We provide families with the comforts of home: lodging, meals transportation, kitchens, dining areas, living rooms, play space and computers. In addition to finding safe and comfortable accommodations within a caring environment, families gain a strong support system, establishing friendships with other families facing similar anxieties, hardships, and uncertainties.
Translating Your Compassion into Immediate Action
The Ronald McDonald House and Family Room of Durham touches the lives of families with critically ill children like no other organization. Since 1980, we have provided safe, comfortable and affordable housing for over 25,000 families from every county in North Carolina, from the mountains to the coast; 43 states and 9 foreign countries.
In 2007 alone, we provided hope to 775 families who stayed in the House and 100,000 who used the Family Room at Duke Children’s Hospital.
These families depend on the immediate help of the Ronald McDonald House and Family Room when it is most needed. And, for nearly 30 years, we have kept our promise of providing hope… thanks to compassionate partners who understand that we rely primarily on the generosity of supporters like you to fulfill our mission.
Your support means that a child can enjoy a game of hide-and-seek on the playground when she’s not in treatment at the hospital. That a mother can check her email and send updates to family members at home. That a father doesn’t have to worry about dinner for his family because staff and volunteers of the Ronald McDonald House have prepared a meal.

The Hearts of Hope Society honors your total, annual giving beginning at $1,000 and above. All types of gifts – cash contributions, securities, property, the value of goods and services – will be acknowledged toward your membership in the society.
Your membership in the Hearts of Hope Society makes you an active partner in supporting the families who turn to the Ronald McDonald House and Family Room to deal with the emotional and financial challenges of caring for a sick child. As a society member, you will learn exactly how your contribution is being used to help the families in need. Also, we hope you will allow us to present you with a special token of appreciation from the families to formally recognize you as a valued supporter.
