FAQs

What if I cannot afford the $10-15 per night fee?
If the nightly donation is a hardship for your family, please do not worry. We are here to assist you and your child. Please notify our staff and arrangements can be made for your family.
What do I need to bring?
We provide what any conventional hotel would provide - linens, shampoos & soaps, towels - as well as a fully stocked kitchen.
What about food?
Although it is not a guaranteed service, most every night volunteer groups prepare meals for our guests.  Brunches during the weekend are also occasionally provided. We provide a full kitchen stocked with donated pantry items as well. However, families still may want to plan to bring or buy groceries.

Will my room have a private restroom?
Most likely your room will not have a private restroom. Families with immune-suppressed children are given priority for our few rooms with private restrooms.

What are the hours of operation for the House?
The Ronald McDonald House is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Can I receive phone calls, mail and faxes at the House?
Yes.  You will have a direct phone line to your room with voicemail capability.  The front office is also able to transfer phone calls to your room, in the case that the person trying to reach you does not know your direct line.

Does the House provide babysitting services?
No. Parents are responsible for their children at all times and the House does not provide babysitting services.

What can our family do at the House for fun?
Guests can enjoy access to wireless Internet, computer and game rooms until 10 p.m. each evening. As well, supervised children may enjoy use of the playroom toys and games until 9 p.m. The living room offers a TV with many viewing options. Check the daily bulletin boards for any special events, news or activities at the House. We also have free passes to a limited number of Durham entertainment facilities.

Can I smoke at the House?
No. Smoking is only allowed on the Smoke Porch area. Smoking is forbidden anywhere else in the House or on the grounds.

Can I do laundry at the House?
Yes. Laundry facilities may be used for your personal clothing and linens. Laundry detergent is provided for guests. Hours both in the small and large laundry areas are from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. These are strictly enforced for the quiet time and relaxation of the families.

What if we have a medical emergency while staying at the House?
Please dial 911 in case of an emergency. Our staff is not trained to treat medical emergencies.
