The Ronald McDonald House of Durham Breaks Ground!

The Ronald McDonald House of Durham broke ground on a major expansion and state-of the-art upgrades to its Durham location, Wednesday, October 26. In attendance were patients & families of the Ronald McDonald House; Durham Mayor William Bell; Ronald McDonald himself; executive director of the House, Bill Donovan; president of the Board of Trustees, Ric Richards; chancellor for health affairs at Duke University Medical Center, Victor Dzau, MD; and Pediatric Oncologist & Board Member, John Falletta, MD.

Plans for the new house include increased living space for families (from 16,000 square feet to 41,000 square feet), five added resident rooms, and 21 new suites for immune-suppressed children. All new rooms will have private baths. Two floors of the new house will be dedicated to a safe-environment for the immune-suppressed children who were once confined to their rooms. State-of-the-art upgrades include the family health and fitness room, education learning center, and reading and reflection nooks on each floor.
The Ronald McDonald House of Durham opened its doors in 1980, as the first house in North Carolina. It’s mission: to allow families to focus on the health and well-being of their critically-ill children by keeping families together who are in need of a community of hope, comfort, and empathy.
