What to Expect
When You Arrive
- Preferred check-in times are from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m.
- Upon arrival, you will receive an orientation, House tour, as well as all codes, keys,
and information needed for your stay.
Transportation & Parking
- You may park on either side of the street adjacent to the House or in the paved lots
on both sides of the House.
- Upon arrival, you will be given a van shuttle schedule for daily and after-hours service.
This schedule is also posted by the front door of the building.
- The Duke Hospital van supplies transportation at scheduled departure times every
two hours each weekday.
- Duke Security provides van service between 6 p.m. and 5 a.m.
Safety & Security
- Exterior doors are locked at all times.
- Each family has a code to both the front door and their bedroom.
- Important Note: The alarm is set from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. The alarm will sound if any
exterior door or windows are opened. Only the front door and smoking porch door are
able to be opened during these hours.
Visitors & Quiet Time
- Visitors to the House are allowed between the hours of 9 a.m. and 10 p.m.
- All visitors must sign in at the front desk.
- Guests should remain in the common areas while visiting the House to maintain
privacy of guest families.
- Quiet Hours are between 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. daily.
Dining Room & Kitchen
- Food is only allowed in the dining room and the kitchen.
- You will be given a cabinet in which to keep your dry storage food, as well as a refrigerator to share with a couple of other families. Please label refrigerated food with your name, room number and date, and store in the fridge assigned to your room.
- Please clean up after yourself in these areas when finished.
Dishwashers must be used for sanitary purposes.
- Check bulletin boards in these areas daily for meal schedules, special events, and routine news.
Medications & Food
- Medications may not be stored in the kitchen. Portable refrigerators are available for in-room use. Please inquire at the front desk to request one of these refrigerators.
- In-room refrigerators are for medicines only and may be not used for food. Food is not allowed in any rooms except for bone marrow transplant suites.
- Breast milk must be stored in a separate freezer provided at our facility, as breast milk cannot be stored with other food and medicines for sanitary purposes.
Housekeeping
- The House has a very small staff with limited housekeeping resources.
- As a guest of the House, it is expected that you will maintain your own bedroom, and bathroom or shared bathroom.
- Just as in your own home, we ask that you clean your dishes and pick up after yourself in all areas.
- Cleaning supplies are provided for bathroom and kitchen areas.
- Linens are given at the beginning of each stay, and guests are expected to wash their own linens should they become soiled. Laundry supplies and facilities are provided.
Pets, Alcohol, Firearms and Smoking
- Pets, alcohol and firearms are not allowed at the House any time.
- Smoking is only allowed within a small outside boundary known as the "smoke porch."
Checking Out
- Please notify the staff when you are checking out, and leave your bedroom door open.
- If you can not afford to pay, it is essential you let us know you are checking out.
If we don't know that the room is vacated, we cannot accept another family into the House.
